Rules and Regulations
RULES AND REGULATIONS Respect for opinions of others. This is our big rule. Remember that smarmy English teacher in high school who gave you zero marks on a question that started “Why do you think Hamlet…” just because your opinion was different to his? Don’t be that guy. Everyone’s opinion of a book is valid. Think “That’s an interesting take. I thought that…” rather than “No - you’re wrong.” Starting new threads As mentioned in the FAQ we really don’t want a million threads about the same thing. So before you start a thread, make sure you search for it. The search engine makes it really easy, even if it’s not in the place you were thinking. While we’re on the subject, to keep things simple, the thread titles must be a book title and/or author name only. Hot Topics Obviously many books are going to take on some of life’s bigger issues, like religion, politics and sexuality. We’d like to keep the conversations here enjoyable for all concerned, so let’s keep it related to the book under discussion, and keep our personal lives out of it. If a book goes against your personal creed, and you’re not able to restrain yourself, then stay out of that particular thread. Different strokes for different folks. That said, books that are racist or sexist in any way will not be discussed on this site. Religious intolerance will also not be condoned. The moderators reserve the right to ban any poster who doesn’t abide by this rule. By the by, if you’re looking to discuss pornography, more power to you, but this aint the site for you. How did you get here anyway? There’s a whole wide world of web out there just waiting for you and your credit card. M: PM me for some links! S: Meredith! M: Um, I mean, never mind. Language We’re all adults, and while we appreciate the occasional beauty of a well-placed expletive, we’d prefer to keep posts family friendly. Our mothers might be reading! Spoilers If you’re posting in a book’s thread, it is to be assumed that you have read it. So there is no need to use spoiler text or talk around a book’s plot. Obviously that changes in our recommendations section. Make it interesting Nobody wants to read pages of posts that just say: :o) Ha! LOL! I agree. Keep the conversations rolling. Eg Susan: As much as I enjoy Tom Kenealley’s work, I can’t see him without smiling at how cute and gnome-like he looks. Meredith: Hee. Hmm. What about: Susan: As much as I enjoy Tom Kenealley’s work, I can’t see him without smiling at how cute and gnome-like he looks. Meredith: Hee, so true. Remember that ad he did for the ARL all those years ago? I can almost forgive him for being a Manly fan; he was so earnest and gnomey. Have you read his la-*test*-('") book? I’ve been meaning to pick it up. While we’re on the topic of post content, we’re not big fans of netspeak and textspeak. Hopefully, as avid readers, neither are you or you at least know how to write without them. Let’s keep the posts well-written as well as substantive. See, there aren’t too many. Let’s just all have fun!
